I could write a whole list of songs that I love and that make me sad and a million other things. My top two are:
The song Tainted Love, by Soft Cell (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZVpR3Pk-r8) reminds me of my first holiday with friends in Eilat, when I was 16 or 17, and listening to a mixed tape that my friend Daly had made for my birthday. It was on there with lots of other songs I love, but this one has always stood out. I love hearing it and it always makes me smile.
A song that makes me feel sad is Yonatan by Oshik Levi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtWTY-dwP8o
Partly because my son is called Yonatan but also because I always carry with me a feeling of not quite belonging and of GA’AGUA to Israel, my family and friends and the life I would have had if we had stayed, this song always touches a nerve.
In terms of sight, I love the painting Sunday in the Park (https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwiLkriBxfPjAhXSEcAKHcE4A9wQMwhxKAAwAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.destinationmansfield.com%2Fevent%2Fsunday-in-the-park-with-george%2F2019-01-18%2F&psig=AOvVaw3r8wix2C4wlN3VPueHvZck&ust=1565362807052639&ictx=3&uact=3) , by Georges Seurat. It hangs in the Art Institute of Chicago and I must have gone to look at it tens of times when we lived there. I also went to the play Sunday in the Park with George, by Sondheim, while living in Chicago, with my dear friend, Trisha. It is a beautifully executed painting with so much attention to detail and when you see it there is always something new and surprising. It makes me wish I could be there.
Edvard Munch’s The Scream never fails to chill and sadden me, recalling as it does all the suffering and horrors of the world.
For smell, my favourite, happiness inducing smell is orange blossom. I grew up in Ra’anana, surrounded by orange orchards. Plus my grandfather had orchards in Rishon le-Zion that we visited regularly. The smell reminds me of home and of the freedom and happiness in my childhood. I love smelling it when I land is Israel (I recently learned that they ensure the air near the airport smells of orange blossom, because apparently I’m not the only one who is emotionally connected to this smell and associates it positively with Israel!)
I’m struggling to come up with a smell that I associate with negative emotions. Of course there are smells that I don’t like (vomit is a key one!) but I don’t thing it’s connected to particularly bad emotions.
I’ll think about it and let you know if anything comes up.
