Intervention 23/9

Updated: Sep 30, 2019

For this intervention I took a few elements from my quilt, before mounting them together - these elements are part of my sensory experience.

I asked the participant to react to the elements, without having previous knowledge of the elements:

What is the element?

what is it used for?

which sense should be used to experience the element?

How does it make her feel?

did it provoke any memory or emotion?

The elements that I used are:

A fabric case packed with dry leaves

Bubble wrap

incentive oil - relaxing mix

Embroidery - Lyrics from "Lovesong" by the cure

Dry leaves - At first she didn't understand what they are, the leaves were inside a fabric case, that was open in the middle to have access to touch the leaves and to smell them - this element has touch, sight, sound, and smell. Once she realizes these are dried leaves and the case was not part of the element, she enjoyed it. It evoked a good feeling and pleasant memories - walking outside and spotting dried leaves, we intentionally stepping on them, crashing the leaves, enjoying the sound they create when walking on them.

Bubble wrap - I took it out of my bag and she smiled a big smile right away.

Immediately created a good feeling and childhood memory squeezing the small bubbles, relaxing feeling. This element has touch, sight, and sound.

Incentive oil - I explained to her the scratch and sniff motif, and she enjoyed the smell, created a good feeling for her.

Embroidery - I saw earlier an embroidery work she had in her study that she received as a gift from her friend.

Her reaction to my embroidery was mixed: she didn't recognize the lyrics, or the song itself. She thought the embroidery was pretty but didn't evoke a good feeling nor bad, she comments that it looks like hard work, and I agreed with her so that consider as not a good thing from her side.
